Using a blog in the classroom

2

The best way to learn how to integrate a blog into your classroom is to view how other people have built their classroom blogs.

Activity:
Take a look at the blog list in the right column. Surf through the blogs listed and look at how the teachers have used their blogs. Do they use their blog as a classroom website? Do they use it as a class portal where class information, rules, homework assignments, presentations and videos are held? Or do they use it as an online filing cabinet where students can submit work and build an online portfolio? Take 10 to 15 minutes to explore these blogs.

Try starting with these:
Desktop Publishing
Dragon Pagoda
Crowley Cafe
Two Writing Teachers

If you would like to find other blogs, try doing a search with
1. www.blogsearch.google.com
2. www.technorati.com
3. www.classblogmeister.com

Here are some ideas for using a blog in the classroom.

Use a classroom blog to:
  • gather and organize internet resources
  • provide online readings for your students to read and respond to
  • post prompts for writing
  • communicate with parents
  • post assignments based on classroom readings
  • post class related information (calendars, events, homework, general information)
  • publish examples of student work done in class
  • showcase student art, poetry, and creative stories
  • create literature circles
  • link to student blogs that showcase their own ideas, reaction and written work
  • build a class newsletter using student work
  • link your class with another class somewhere else in the world
